Actually it's not my obsession. One of my students suggested I paint Jeff Lynne as a male alternative to the painting "Summer". Portraiture is not my subject matter of choice but it's good to move away from one's comfort zone now and again; and I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.
The first painting (bottom left) was not going quite the way I envisaged so I begin again. I often do this, but continue to work on the first attempt at the same time. One of the challenges of working in watercolour is there is no going back. I find that working on two paintings simultaneously can give me a safety net. I have discovered that working in this way allows me to take risks and it is these risks that quite often elevate an ordinary picture into something special.

Opinion as to which is the "better" painting is, as usual, divided. One critique described the first as "third division", with the second "premiership division" (I understood the sporting reference only by the tone of voice used!)
